After failing to become a serious rival to payment processing giant PayPal, Google Checkout is headed out to pasture. But that doesn’t mean Google is abandoning the checkout process. Even as Google Checkout says goodbye, Google Wallet is entering the ring as a new challenger in mobile checkout.
Google plans to transition from Checkout to Wallet in a way that is as seamless as possible for merchants, switching the digital goods purchases and the “Buy with Google” button without any planned breaks in service.
When the transition is complete, the benefits of Wallet over Checkout will be clear. Both are solutions to similar problems, but Wallet will be more user-friendly and offer a broader range of services to merchants and other users.
Ultimately, Google Checkout dates back to a time when the future of online consumerism was uncertain. It never developed a clear-cut strategy, and its branding suffered as a result. In that regard, Google Wallet is already a much better product.
Coming Out With a Bang
When Google released Checkout in 2006, its purpose and future were murky. The company considered using it as a shopping portal but already had a similar product, Google Shopping, in operation. Checkout didn’t support peer-to-peer transactions, a main feature of PayPal. And when Android smartphones hit the market, Google suffered from its lack of easy, streamlined payment methods to facilitate mobile purchases, including music, apps and other items.
Google Wallet is the mobile-friendly answer to that need. Users can easily add money to a virtual “Wallet” and spend it in a variety of ways: at online merchants, on mobile devices and/or by executing peer-to-peer transactions.
As it becomes more common to use mobile devices to make payments at physical locations, Wallet will already have the branding in place to help consumers make the jump from traditional wallets to an aptly named virtual solution.
Google Checkout will officially stop processing new orders Nov. 20.
